The assessment of the ecological conditions of rivers is crucial for their appropriate management and restoration. Bioindicators commonly used to evaluate the river status (i.e. diatoms, aquatic macrophytes, benthic macroinvertebrates and fish) detect alterations of water quality, but are not particularly sensitive to hydromorphological degradation, which is another relevant pressure in river systems. Furthermore, those bioindicators are usually applied only to flowing channels. We developed a new multimetric index, the Odonate River Index (ORI), to assess the conditions of the whole corridor in alluvial rivers. The ORI is a development of an evaluation system proposed in Austria, and based on the Odonate Habitat Index (OHI). Odonates were chosen as bioindicators for the ecological integrity of the river corridor, since this taxon provides information on the conditions of their aquatic breeding sites, as well as on the surrounding terrestrial areas, due to its amphibiotic life cycle. We used a case study of 18 reaches from six Italian Alpine rivers, characterized by different morphological conditions and level of human impact. Within each study reach, we selected four sites, both lotic and lentic sites. Dragonfly surveys consisted in field observation of adults, and collection of larvae and exuviae. To define the best sampling strategy, we compared the results of the ORI metrics obtained varying the input data by combining different sampling methods: the best compromise between effort and exhaustiveness was obtained coupling the observation of adults with the collection of exuviae. We found the ORI to be a robust and reliable tool to assess the status of the river corridor in a wide range of environmental conditions and river morphology, being particularly suitable to detect hydromorphological degradation and alterations of the structure of aquatic and riparian vegetation. We identified two limiting factors for the applicability of this index: low water temperatures of the main channel (i.e. mean annual value below 10 °C) and river reaches with no or scarce aquatic and riparian vegetation. In addition to the assessment of river conditions, the ORI could also be applied for monitoring the effects of river restoration actions.  相似文献

Two forces are in general, hypothesized to have influenced the origin of the organization of the genetic code: the physicochemical properties of amino acids and their biosynthetic relationships. In view of this, we have considered a model incorporating these two forces. In particular, we have studied the optimization level of the physicochemical properties of amino acids in the set of amino acid permutation codes that respects the biosynthetic relationships between amino acids. Where the properties of amino acids are represented by polarity and molecular volume we obtain indetermination percentages in the organization of the genetic code of approximately 40%. This indicates that the contingent factor played a significant role in structuring the genetic code. Furthermore, this result is in agreement with the genetic code coevolution hypothesis, which attributes a merely ancillary role to the properties of amino acids while it suggests that it was their biosynthetic relationships that organized the code. Furthermore, this result does not favor the stereochemical models proposed to explain the origin of the genetic code. On the other hand, where the properties of amino acids are represented by polarity alone, we obtain an indetermination percentage of at least 21.5%. This might suggest that the polarity distances played an important role and would therefore provide evidence in favor of the physicochemical hypothesis of genetic code origin. Although, overall, the analysis might have given stronger support to the latter hypothesis, this did not actually occur. This review summarises the existing literature and outlines the theoretical basis for using standard methods for sampling diatoms from rivers to sample littoral diatoms and other phytobenthos from standing waters. The European Union's Water Framework Directive has created a statutory obligation for EU Member States to monitor macrophytes and phytobenthos in lakes. Although there has been a considerable amount of work using phytobenthos (especially diatoms) to monitor river water quality in Europe, there are fewer studies on the use of phytobenthos for monitoring in lakes. European standard methods for sampling diatoms from rivers should be suitable, with only minor modifications, for sampling littoral diatoms from lakes and other standing water bodies. These recommendations should be applicable to all temperate regions.  相似文献

Alzheimer’s disease is a persistent neurodegenerative disorder of elderly characterized clinically by irreversible loss of memory due to accumulation of amyloid beta peptides within the amyloid plaques. We report the parallel synthesis and screening results of diverse substituted di-thiazole piperazine benzamides. A new compound TPI-1917-49 was identified as a promising amyloid reducing agent by lowering the levels of Aβ at least in two cell types and in vivo.  相似文献

The leech whole-body shortening reflex consists of a rapid contraction of the body elicited by a mechanical stimulus to the anterior of the animal. We used a variety of reduced preparations — semi-intact, body wall, and isolated nerve cord — to begin to elucidate the neural basis of this reflex in the medicinal leech Hirudo medicinalis. The motor pattern of the reflex involved an activation of excitatory motor neurons innervating dorsal and ventral longitudinal muscles (dorsal excitors and ventral excitors respectively), as well as the L cell, a motor neuron innervating both dorsal and ventral longitudinal muscles. The sensory input for the reflex was provided primarily by the T (touch) and P (pressure) types of identified mechanosensory neuron. The S cell network, a set of electrically-coupled interneurons which makes up a fast conducting pathway in the leech nerve cord, was active during shortening and accounted for the shortest-latency excitation of the L cells. Other, parallel, interneuronal pathways contributed to shortening as well. Federal laws and funding initiatives, such as the No Child Left Behind Act and the Race to the Top campaign, have created an increasing incentive for schools nationwide to document student progress, standardize assessment practices, and evaluate teachers according to student success. In response, the Common Core State Standards, a popular yet controversial policy, has emerged. Implemented at the state level, these standards focus heavily on the areas of English language arts and mathematics, subjects not traditionally incorporated to a great extent in music classrooms. In order for music to maintain a role as an essential subject in the school curriculum, it is imperative that music educators be able to associate themselves with a complementary initiative that allows them to demonstrate how students are meeting benchmarks required at the state and national levels without sacrificing the integrity of music instruction itself. Of the existing models available, the Framework for 21st Century Learning provides the most appropriate structure for determining music teacher effectiveness and for organizing learning objectives that can be assessed to show student growth in music education classrooms.  相似文献

Summary A synaptic mutant was found in haploids (2n=2x=24) extracted from the Mexican potato variety Atzimba (2n=4x=48). The mutant is inherited as a simple Mendelian recessive, designated sy4. Meiotic abnormalities of the mutant during microsporogenesis include: poor synapsis at pachytene; high frequency of univalents at diakinesis; elongated and curved spindles and univalents being scattered over the spindles at metaphase I and anaphase I; abnormal chromosome distribution at anaphase I; and production of sterile pollen, presumably due to unbalanced chromosome complement. The expression of sy4 in megasporogenesis was also detected. The sy4 mutant is very useful for potato breeding when combined with another meiotic mutant, parallel spindles (ps), because haploids homozygous for sy4 and ps produce fertile 2n pollen which transmit almost intact genotypes of the parents to the progenies. Thus, the meiotic mutants provide a powerful breeding method for maximizing heterozygosity and epistasis. They can also provide a very efficient method of transferring diploid germplasm, which has desired characteristics efficiently combined at the 2x level, to tetraploids. Many haploids have been identified with 2n pollen production by ps alone or by sy4 and ps, vigorous growth and good flowering, and a high level of resistance to late blight. The importance of a further search for meiotic mutants and their use for breeding is discussed.  相似文献

The molecular packing of magnesium paracrystals of α-tropomyosin has been examined by electron microscopy. Previous work (Caspar et al., 1969) had shown that these structures are composed of antiparallel arrays of molecules and we have now studied the relative positions of the molecules by matching the banding patterns of paracrystals positively stained with uranyl acetate to the sequence of the molecule. The overlap between the C-termini of the molecules in the unit cell is 175 ± 2 residues and the overlap of the N-termini lies in the range 107 to 122 residues. In the long overlap region (between C-termini), and probably also in the short overlap region, the molecular packing is such that the periodic zones of negative charge present in the sequence (Stewart & McLachlan, 1975) lie opposite one another. We propose that magnesium bridges between opposing negative charges contribute strongly to the stability of the structure. We confirm earlier work (Stewart, 1975b) on the absolute orientation of the molecules in the paracrystal: the troponin binding site on tropomyosin is approximately 130 Å from the C-terminus, and Cys190 is within 10 to 15 Å units of the C-C dyad.  相似文献

We study the role of education during the COVID-19 epidemic in Italy. We compare excess mortality in 2020 and 2021 compared to the pre-pandemic mortality between municipalities with different shares of educated residents. We find that education initially played a strong protective role, which however quickly faded out. After pondering several alternative explanations, we tentatively interpret this finding as the outcome of the interplay between education, information and public health communication, whose availability and coherence varied along the epidemic.  相似文献

血流信号的采集可基于超声多普勒技术。利用多普勒超声探头在肢体主动脉脉搏处采集到血流多普勒频移信号,对信号电压进行放大,一方面直接输入扬声器转变为音频信号,得到多普勒音;同时用频率/电压变换器LM331变换多普勒频移信号,得到脉搏波信号。基于此原理,设计了使用无创、直观的方法获得肢体血流参数,并经PC机处理,最终在显示器上显示脉搏波形和血压数值的方法。  相似文献
